I’ve come to believe that respecting agency, serving and being served by others, and appreciating people who believe differently can be a vital expression of holiness. These are the kinds of relationships that help move us toward the Zion-like community we are striving for.
Zion is described as “the pure in heart” working together and continually turning toward God (D&C 97:21). It doesn’t require perfection—thankfully.
Our Family’s “Holiness” Jesus Celebration🎉
This month, I created a simple, multi-sensory, heart-centered way to help our family explore the principle of holiness. Below are a few of the ways we experienced it together (not all on the same day).
1. Reflection Questions — Storytelling Magic
We shared what our relationship with Christ has felt like and helped our 6-year-old recognize moments when her own relationship with Him was growing.
Parents and Children together:
We reflected on this question:
“Where did we feel Jesus helping us be holy together with other people today?”
We offered examples like:
“When you shared…” “When you were kind…” “When we disagreed calmly…”
We also talked about how:
“Jesus helps us try again to get along with each other. That’s part of growing in holiness.”
We gave each family member an ingredient to add to a bowl (such as):
Pretzels Cashews Craisins Peanuts Reese's Pieces
The kids stirred everything together.
When we finished and started eating, I said something like:
"Look at our snack. It wouldn’t be trail mix without all the different kinds of foods. Everyone brought something. People work like that too. Jesus helps us be kind, share, help, and be friendly so everyone can belong."
3. Children's Book — Heartfelt Learning
We enjoyedSome Friends To Feed: The Story of Stone Soupby Pete Seeger and Paul DuBois Jacobs. I appreciated that the story includes children in a meaningful way and includes a song as well.
I mentioned that, like the stranger in the story, Jesus’ love motivates us to reach out and help the community around us with what we have.
To add a little fun ambiance, I made a banner for our space. The base stays the same each month, and I add a new centerpiece to match our theme. You can receive them free as well as these teaching ideas each month when you sign up for my e-letters below.
“Jesus' Love Makes Me Holy.”
This month, we explored how holiness grows through connection—with God and with each other. I hope it helped!
